Selena De Carvalho – Reflections

This work is a reflection on the ways of children: my daughter Ruby Peppa and her fabulous companion Bassi Brown.
The unencumbered adoration and sense of play children express beyond the conditioning of social etiquette, an existence of raw exchange, is the inspiration for this work. I am thoughtful on how my children, who so heavily influence and enhance the way I perceive the world, have also bound me to my adulthood and my roles as a mother and woman. I have investigated working on papers torn from the beginning of vintage books. The blank first pages, dog-eared and often grimy (in this case bearing an inscription to a previous recipient), represent the anticipation of beginning a journey, a story. The paper is imbued with its own sense of having lived, an invisible history, a playful metaphor on the histories each of us has encrypted within our DNA.
