David Chrichton-Gill – The Bestowed Smile

I’m an 18-year-old student at Rosny College and I chose to draw a best mate of mine, Jimmy Surtees. We first met in Year 7 at New Town High School four and a half years ago and have been mates since. He has always been supportive of my artwork and really boosted my confidence over these past few years.
Earlier this year Jimmy and his sister Bec lost their father to cancer. The strength that they both had through this mournful time and the strength they’ve had every day since is truly inspiring. They have shown me that even if life doesn’t work in your favour you can come out on top and defy the odds. I wanted to do a piece of work for them in memory of their father and the happy times they shared. When Jimmy showed me the picture of the three of them, the same smile on each face, lying in the comfort and security of a warm bed, I knew I had to draw it.
The way in which I work is to transfer a photograph onto paper with chalk pastels. I chose to use only black and white on this piece because although there is no colour I believe it gives real warmth to the figures. I’ve always found black and white images more aesthetically pleasing. The title is quite self-explanatory. The first time I saw the photograph the first thing I noticed were the similarities. The main similarities, to me, are their joyous smiles.
I didn’t do this piece to win money or please judges. I did it in memory of Paul Shackloth and in admiration of two very good friends of mine, Jimmy and Bec.
