Josephine Cole – Self-Portrait on Bed

Contemplation is at the heart of my art practice. The most important aspect is simple observation of my external world. I am a quiet person, often without realising, because I am busy watching others talk and interact. Human beings are naturally curious things.
Within the art of portraiture, I feel as though artists have a great opportunity to not only observe these curiosities, but to delve further into their complexities by expressing them to the public. It was natural to direct this contemplation and observation of my self in a self-portrait, not so much because of the level of interest I have in myself, but because I wanted to challenge my person under the same inquisitive eyes that naturally examine the world around them. The work captures a brief interruption in a reflective and isolated state. The flooding of warmth aims to instil an intimacy but is shattered by a remote, solemn expression, underpinned by the expanse of a distant world beyond the window.
