The subject of my portrait is Adrian Franklin, Professor of Sociology at the University of Tasmania. Adrian is also well-known for his appearance on the panel of the ABC television show Collectors. He is a collector of art and furniture from the 1950s to the 1970s. Adrian has written a number of books studying society and the interactions and activities of humans with animals.

When I was young, I was friends with Adrian Franklin’s daughter, Brooke. In 2003, when I was nine, Adrian and his family moved to the United Kingdom and I lost contact with Brooke. The next year they returned to Tasmania. Recently, I have become more interested and involved with design. I started watching Collectors to broaden my knowledge of design and art. Seeing Adrian act so enthusiastically about collections, appliances and furniture from the 50s, 60s and 70s inspired me to meet him again and draw his portrait.

In this portrait, Adrian chose a favourite piece from a loved collection. He is holding a piece of Bitossi pottery, which is a horse from the mid-1950s. Apart from representing his love of collecting, the horse symbolises his connection with his work on animal and human relationships. Adrian’s shirt features century-old Rolls Royce cars and archways, also reflecting his love of this era. I have tried to capture his enthusiasm and excitement for his collection through the animation in his eyes and smile.
