Ingrid Andersen – A Life in Colour

I decided to do a portrait of my father, Tom Andersen. Tom has been an artist for most of his life, having held 48 solo exhibitions in Australia, USA and Europe, as well as continually painting commissions for the corporate market. He owns the Wellington Gallery, which he opened in 1976 in the foothills of Mt Wellington.
I have always been strongly influenced by my father. I have spent many hours looking at his paintings and watching him work, trying to interpret the stories behind them and matching them with tales of his adventures. I grew up in a studio filled with colour, paint and brushes, and my painting depicts a life captured on canvas. In many of my own paintings, including A Life in Colour, I can see how strongly I have been influenced by his work even though I bring to my own paintings my own distinctive style. The subject matter that interests me most is interpreting experiences in my own life.
Throughout my lifetime there has always been colour and paint surrounding me. I chose such bright colours to represent what a colourful person my father is. My challenge was how to represent his life, what colours would encapsulate all I wanted to say about someone who has lived their life in colour.
My painting, A Life in Colour, shows Tom painting at his easel.
