Abbey Jean MacDonald, Mowbray
Dom and Ari, oil on canvas

Dominique came into my life when I was 13 years old. She had a penchant for spontaneous mischief and I would often find myself putting out the little ‘spot fires’ she sometimes left in her wake. We have seen and experienced each other’s growth and development over the years from unpredictable and silly to stable and sensible. We have seen each other at our craziest and have witnessed each other accomplish incredible feats.
Over recent years, Dom’s youthful fire, ferocity and spark has softened into the glowing warmth of motherhood. Thankfully, her appetite for mischief is much more satiable these days; however, you can still catch a flash of it in her smile, and in baby Ariette as she playfully gnaws on her mother’s shoulder. Even at eight months old, I can see a flicker of Dominique’s cheekiness in Ariette as she fearlessly discerns and relentlessly explores.
This portrait intends to capture the warmth these two beautiful people embody and share. I have also aimed to share with you the ‘cheeky sparkle’ Dominique exudes, which I know contributes to her unique allure. These are two people that you simply cannot help but fall in love with. Dominique is a truly beautiful woman, inside and out, and Ariette is undoubtedly set to follow suit.
It has been my intention to create an image of Dominique and Ariette that is difficult to walk away from; like trying to remove yourself from the proximity of a crackling fire in winter. I always feel warm and happy in the company of ‘Dom and Ari’.
This portrait is testament to and reflective of the friendship Dominique and I share. We share a bond that is strong and enduring, gentle and forgiving; forged in youth and consolidated by growth and experience.
