Growly face, stencilled painting

I chose to paint my sister, Ebony, as my selected Tasmanian because she influences me artistically and is my inspiration in almost anything. When at college, Ebony’s portfolio was of stencilled artwork, and watching her work change and develop inspired my own college portfolio and my medium of work.
Ebony is in her second year at university where she is studying medicine.
While taking on this heavy workload, she has managed to support herself mentally and financially after moving cities to attend university. In her first year, several of her major tests were part of a result mix-up and she was forced to re-study for and re-sit her exams while also keeping up with the work she would have been doing otherwise. While taking on this incredible challenge, both my mother and I were concerned for her future and were unable to see her, since spending time with us took away from her time to study.
After sitting her last catch-up exam, Ebony posted a picture on Facebook to show her current feelings, and the resulting photo is the picture I chose to edit and stencil for this painting. This face is what we have dubbed her ‘growly’ face, giving me an easy title to choose for my piece.
Where most people would have given up or fallen apart emotionally, Ebony spent two long months studying in her room on less than three hours sleep a night. I consider myself to be a reasonably tough person, but watching my sister push herself to sit these exams and achieve high marks was truly inspiring to me and any other student out there.
