Zackary, dry pastel

I chose my closest friend, Zackary, as the subject of my portrait. Music has become an influential and very important part of his life. Zac plays drums and guitar in two bands: one garage punk and the other indie rock. His style, fashion, hair and his extremely tall stature make him stand out in a crowd. Zac has presence.
I have represented Zac’s personality through his relationship with music. His deep connection with his musical creations and love for both past and present music strongly influence his character. In all situations, on-stage or simply alone with me, Zac’s connection with the lyrics is shown passionately through his body language and movement. Music has influenced his personality, impacted on his life and has also supported him through recent years.
In my portrait of Zac, I have depicted him in dark moody monochrome to portray him within a grunge, punk and post-punk setting. I have captured him singing to emphasise his strong physical nature. Zac’s powerful connection to the music is expressed through his animated face and commanding posture. The tension and movement in his body is accentuated by his tightly gripped hands and awkwardly positioned feet. This full body portrait accurately captures Zac performing naturally and his strong musical emotions.
