Heart of Darkness, oil on linen

Notes from my journal relating to the painting Heart of Darkness, 2011.
A painting that I think Damien (Baumgartner) might like.
Heart pumps blood to brain Heart –Blood –Brain
The misalignments and disproportionate parts (of the photo-realist area) are like the bite and hiss of a sound recording.
The theatre of Damien’s mind
Damien isn’t a square; he is a force of nature with at least eight known sides.
(Damien is) celebrating the beauty of death and decay (with his work)
A festive heart of darkness?
Now when I see road kill I think of Damien – he is evaluating modern Tasmania like no other.
Exploration of the soul – mine and Damien’s
Gothic atmosphere of Coats Patons (where Damien and I both have studios)
Painting for affection?
(Alternative title): Watching Damien through eight visions of deceit and the blue stone sphincter of my third eye
Below is some interpretive prose from Peter Wolfgang Gabriel, my literary alter ego.
With burning twisting trapezius muscles we paint through the night. The building around us creaking and cavorting with the ache and age of its asbestos skeleton and the demons of long ago. It is the toxic wine from the mercury vagina of our shared mistress that keeps us wilful and determined. This mistress is known more widely as the sublime.
