Eliza Freeman, Wynyard
She was a witch #1, silver gelatine photograph

This self-portrait explores two different sides of my personality: the controlling, violent side and the vulnerable, naive side. Without over-explaining my intentions in this image, the ‘witch’ character represents a traumatic event in my past. The witch, with her white fire and claws, occasionally attacks my subconscious when I am weak, often in the form of nightmares. For me, this image is about feeling weak and exposed, and being susceptible to greater forces; forces that eventually have to be faced: the witch, her fire, the visceral emotions of the subconscious.
I printed the image myself using traditional darkroom methods, but an unconventional photographic technique called ‘light drawing’ to create this image. The slow shutter speed technique allowed me to portray both characters, without using modern photographic techniques or post-shoot/post-darkroom alterations. It is the first in a story of four images.
