Helen is going to be one of the youngest doctors in the country this time next year. It’s the ever-present grounding force more terrifying than any exam paper. Every line she reads must be learned. It’s not because she fears the scorn of her peers, although she does. It’s not because she expects the best from herself, although she does. It’s because her mistake could mean suffering or death. She feels for others. It doesn’t matter who they are, where they come from, what they’ve done. You can’t see it in her portrait, but she’s got the biggest heart I’ve ever known.
I photographed her using a macro lens. It took 15 shots to get her at the magnification I wanted. The resulting image had 63 million pixels. I then made it 40% bigger. What all these numbers mean is that I can print this image at huge dimensions. I don’t hide anything; it’s all there. I know she wouldn’t mind.
