Dimity Vanderpot, Devonport
Puppetry, acrylic on canvas

Puppetry is the art of manipulating and animating the inanimate.
I chose to paint Graeme, a furniture proprietor in Devonport.
Graeme is quite a charismatic man; always on the go and bearing a broad toothy smile as he meets and greets.

Here within the frame, Graeme lies with his two pups, both vying
for his attention. He is the dominant one, having control of the two young dogs.

The same is replicated within Graeme’s professional world where he has control over sales representatives and staff who all try to grab his attention to secure deals of the day.

Several aspects have been manipulated in the artwork. The dogs’ positions have been stylised (circular) to create movement. The paint has been applied to manipulate and reflect light off the tiles. The portrait aims to capture its entities in movement.

A lot of freedom has been used in the creation of the work. Paint has been applied carefully but not obsessively controlled – like its subject. There have been no constraints, the tiles are endless.
There are “no strings attached”.
