Jai Sutton-Bassett – Kate

I have chosen to paint a portrait of Kate Fletcher. Kate is a person I have known for some years. She runs a secondhand clothing stall at Salamanca Market and co-runs a secondhand clothing store, Mojos, in the city Kate provides for those looking for something a little different to the usual op-shop fare. Her diverse interests in collecting bric-a-brac and clothes have always interested me.
In this portrait I have tried to capture Kate’s spirit and interests. Rather than paint her at one of her shops where most people would usually see her, I have chosen to paint her in her home. Interesting and unusual clothes fill her house and provide an insight into her character. Kate is truly an individual with eclectic and flamboyant taste in clothing. She is an artist herself and has exhibited her collection of gloves around Hobart. I wanted to capture the feeling of all the amazing objects and clothes she gathers around her while still showing how she stands out as a character in her own right.
