Jenny Jerome – Katie

Katie Marie Sawford is the subject of my painting. Katie is a young Tasmanian. She isn’t famous or notorious, but she is full of a warm, cheeky spirit that, I think, makes her a lovely subject to paint. In my painting I’ve aimed to give the viewer a glimpse of Katie’s personality – a cheeky smile, showing her slightly crooked teeth, her hair pulled up under her favourite funky hat – little glimpses of the person behind the painting.
Portraits are more than likenesses. To be successful it is important that a portrait has a feeling of the emotion of the subject. A portrait needs to tell a story with details, colours and composition. In line with this, my style is more impressionistic than photographic. I want my portraits to be alive, to make the viewer engage with the subject, to be interested in finding out who the person is, what their story is.
Katie, a music lover, is a native of Hobart.
