Bob Brown is a politician who remains resolutely optimistic yet his philosophy is to be defiant, who is gently spoken yet fires equal amounts of passion in his supporters and opponents alike, who in many respects is very conventional but has pursued a radical local, national and international agenda. He has never lost sight of where it all began, in the fight to save Tasmania’s wilderness areas.

To countless Tasmanians, Bob Brown remains a beacon of hope – hope for a better environment, hope for a more compassionate Tasmania, hope for a better world. He took the Greens from the political wilderness into the political mainstream and redefined Australian politics along the way. It is a journey that has been anything but easy, and as a result he is seen by many as the honest face of Australian politics.

He has a face that tells a thousand stories. Every line encompassing his features gives the impression of a full and interesting life. His distinctive eyes seem to project an earnest plead.

Bob Brown was chosen as my portrait subject firstly as a challenge to create a resemblance to such a well-known and highly publicised local face; and secondly as a man whose honesty and integrity I admire.
