Kate McMurtry – Stephen

Stephen Wilson is a Tasmanian artist living life in great exploration and humour.
Stephen’s home, an oasis of bushland scrub, is abundant with life and creative inspiration. This is where he fabricates glorious artworks ranging from the most delicate depictions of birds to blustering fantasy scenes.
Stephen has an excellent face for portraiture, showing years of laughter and experience. His smile (which he says is goofy), the fullness of his beard, the sharpness of his nose and his lively eyes all give clues into the high-spirited personality and uplifting character of Stephen Wilson.
I enjoyed making the difficulties of his skin tones work with the harshness of dark shadows. Contrasting the looseness of Stephen’s shirt with the details of his features worked well in order to show the subdued side of him as well as his spontaneity.
In this portrait I attempted to capture the reflective aspect of Stephen without props such as his frequently worn hat and humorous expressions.
I chose to depict Stephen as the face of Tasmania because he is a quiet achiever, yet he has a personality that stands well above the ordinary.
