Maya Komaromy arrived in Australia as a Hungarian refugee following the Second World War. She travelled to Tasmania unable to speak English, with few possessions and a young family who had been born in a war zone; therefore typifying refugees migrating to Tasmania at the time. Through escaping a war-torn country with a husband in the cavalry and young children, raising young children in a foreign country and adapting to the Tasmanian way of life, she displayed immense courage and has constantly smiled in the face of adversity. I believe that her whole-hearted approach to life, despite numerous hardships, is reflected in her expressive face. It is due to these qualities that she possesses in abundance, and the way in which they are evidently illustrated through her face that I chose Maya Komaromy as my portrait subject.
