Meegan PearceSelf-Portrait

The painting I have chosen to enter is Self-Portrait. I chose it because of its emotional strength and limited, almost monochromatic, colour scheme. This lack of colour places emphasis on its expressive and emotional qualities. I chose myself as the subject matter for several reasons, the main one being my continued interest in other people’s perception of you in comparison to your own. I find this an interesting notion, as you can never see yourself from an outsider’s perspective so you can only guess how others perceive you. This has been a concept I have been exploring over the past 18 months and am continuing to investigate. In my paintings I try to capture personality and something deeper than facial expression. One technique used to do this is through use of colour and pattern usually taken from my clothing and personal belongings. This is important because people don’t choose and cannot change (without plastic surgery) their face but they can alter perceptions through the way they dress, which says just as much if not more than their facial features. Another reason for using myself as a subject matter is the simple ease of being the sitter. I know myself better than anyone else and understand how I feel so I can express that more readily than someone else’s emotions.

I am particularly inspired by the work of Abbey McCulloch, Del Kathryn Barton and Camille Rose Garcia.
