For my portrait subject I chose to paint my father. I thought that choosing one of my family members was the best idea because they mean the most to me and have had a major part in shaping my life. My father probably has the most
interesting face to paint out of all my family, maybe due to his age, character and facial features. I also see my father as quite an important Tasmanian. Although originally from England, he later moved to Tasmania, settling initially in Latrobe with his partner and son. After living in Latrobe for some time my parents, and now two children, moved to Gunns Plains.

Here four children grew up on an amazing property that my father and mother gradually shaped from a weed-ridden mess to an amazing place of beautiful trees, paddocks, orchards and vegies. Later on, wanting to be free of the clutches of a farm, he slowly built a house at Squeaking Point out of many different library books (not literally). With only one of the few blocks where the natural and native coastal bush was left to grow, he has helped in keeping Tasmania for what it is known – the clean, green state. I therefore believe he is worthy of a portrait.
