Loralee Newitt – Milly - Resilience

Resilience is the best gift we can be given and is something that I see often in my little sister Milly. Teachers talk about resilience a lot at school, but Milly IS resilience.
Since our father passed away two years ago she has been through more than anyone should at such a young age. She was nine when he died. It was hard for all of us but it seemed so very tough for her. It was a long time before she could laugh again unashamedly.
Sometimes I listen to Milly laughing now and see that she is getting stronger. I watch in amazement as she grows into a young woman and admire all of her good qualities, among them strength and resilience.
I am a part of the ‘Taking Charge’ programme at school, which means I have taken charge of my own curriculum. I have chosen to work mainly in the art room, as art will be my future career. I am inspired by many artists,
such as Del Kathryn Barton, Louise Hearman and Juan Davila. I really enjoyed doing this work, catchig the texture of the paint and experimenting with catching Milly’s expression.
In this work, it was important for me to show Milly how beautiful she is. In this way, I also show her it’s OK to laugh again.
