Catherine Peacock – Bring Me Back the Magic

One of the many virtues of portraiture is that it may be used as a vessel to reflect the depicted subject’s identity within the realm of certain time and space.
Having recently finished school, I am completing a GAP year prior to continuing further formal study at the Tasmanian School of Art. Teetering on the border of adulthood has caused me to contemplate the importance of identity to me; of the identity I have forged for myself thus far, and the myriad future possibilities of what may be. Moreover, an assorted collection of past and future selves.
By painting a self-portrait, I endeavour to capture a feeling of longing for the past in conjunction with an apprehension of the imminent future through subject positioning, stance and expression. The arms have been crossed as a symbol of defence against the unknown, though paint brushes have been placed in the hands against a largely blank canvas to display an element of control. Simultaneously, I hope to portray the subject as assessing an incomplete artwork, while concurrently being surrounded by a few roughly sketched lines of what may be. Metaphorically, assessing my life as is in preparation for further work and considering the next brush stroke of a painting in which I am the subject.
